The First Principle
The first principle of media is that media messages are constructed. This means that they are not based on reality and instead are designed to focus on a certain target audience. An example of this would be the show Jersey Shore and how when it was on air it was directed towards teenagers even though drinking and partying all the time is nowhere near reality.
The second principle
The second principle of media is that media follows patterns. This means that every form of media has a certain way it should be set up and has certain rules. When these rules are broken, it can result in an unhappy audience. An example of this is in scary movies how there is a certain type of music playing when you know something is about to happen. If there was no music, the audience would not react the same!
The third principle
The third principle of media is that media messages have embedded values. This means that every piece of media is designed to make you feel a certain way or have certain emotions brought up when you see or hear it. An example of this is in commercials for pet adoption or donation when they play sad music. It is supposed to make you feel sad and guilt you into donating.
The fourth principle
The fourth principle of media is that media has consumer interests. This means that the maker of the goods, or the business only has one thing in mind and that is to make money. An example of this is when you are watching a TV show, based on what kind of show you are watching or what channel it is on, that can decide what kind of commercials to play. Like on a child's channel, they will play commercials about toys.
